Sometimes breathing problems related to the internal nasal structures can be corrected at the same time as nose reshaping. For Ontario residents this portion of the rhinoplasty surgery may be covered by the Ministry of Health. While there is no upper age limit for having rhinoplasty, patients may be advised to wait until they are 14 or 15 (when the nose is fully developed) before undergoing rhinoplasty.

In evaluating you for rhinoplasty, Dr. Rival will examine your nose both internally and externally. Skin quality as well as the size and shape of your nose must be carefully studied. Sometimes, chin augmentation may be suggested so that a more pleasing facial balance can be achieved.

How is the surgery done?

During rhinoplasty the skin of the nose is elevated to expose the underlying bone and cartilaginous framework. These structures are then re- shaped to achieve the desired result. The skin and soft tissues will re-position themselves over the new form of your nose. Generally two approaches can be used : the so called closed approach where all the incisions are inside the nose, and the open approach where a small incision is made across the skin in between the nostrils. Dr Rival has experience in both procedures. The decision of which approach to use depends on the specific nasal deformity. If the base of the nose is narrowed or the nostrils reduced, small pieces of skin below the nostrils will be removed.

What to expect after surgery

Most patients will wear a nasal splint or cast for one week following surgery. If any packing is used it is generally removed within 24 hours. Some degree of bruising and swelling is normal after most rhinoplasties. The bruising usually fades within 2 weeks and can be covered up with make up. The swelling in the nose can take longer to resolve. Therefore it may take several months to appreciate the final result. Depending on your occupation, most patients are able to return to work within 1-2 weeks.
