About Dr. Richard Rival

Dr. RivalToronto facial surgeon Dr. Richard Rival graduated with honours from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1989. He then completed a six-year surgical training program in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery – at the University of California in Los Angeles and the University of Toronto. These centers are considered to be among the best in the world for Head and Neck Surgery as well as Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. During this time he was trained by experts in the fields of rhinology (nasal surgery), general plastic surgery and facial plastic surgery.

Dr. Rival also completed a year of research in Craniofacial Surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children. He then traveled internationally to gain further expertise in rhinoplasty, nasal and facial plastic surgery.

Dr. Rival's Toronto cosmetic surgery practice is limited exclusively to the face and neck. He is well known for his expertise in rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty and offers computer imaging to help visualize the potential of these surgeries. Dr. Rival has lectured nationally and internationally on rhinoplasty. Since 2006 he has been Co-director of an annual instructional course in Toronto for other surgeons with a focus on rhinoplasty. This has attracted surgeons from across Canada and the United States. His philosophy is always to create natural results without leaving signs of surgery.

Dr. Rival trains residents and fellows in rhinoplasty and facial plastic surgery as part of the teaching faculty at the University of Toronto. He also holds staff positions at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto and Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket.

Dr. Rival is board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The ABFPRS is the only certification organization in North America which examines exclusively in cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery of the face and neck. This certification process is rigorous and requires surgeons to have extensive training and experience in facial plastic surgery to be eligible to sit for the exam. Surgeons must have performed over one hundred plastic surgery procedures on their own in order to qualify to take the examination.

Dr. Rival is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He is also a fellow of both the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Canadian Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
